I thought you all had some great ideas, and so I'd like to try to have an open discussion about ALL of the films we've watched so far and the units you've gone through. Obviously, we'll have to have some ground rules first:
\n
\n1) Be constructive. Don't offer criticism without also offering a suggestion, a solution, or some kind of positive information as well. Nobody likes a Negative Nancy, a Sally Sadpants, or a Joyless Jeffrey. (Those are real.)
\n
\n2) Be kind. While I don't have any problem whatsoever with you telling it like it is and giving your opinion about a film (i.e., "I really disliked this film because... "), the moment you attack a fellow poster, the game is over, the discussion is deleted, and you may be facing some disciplinary action depending on the force of your crime. In other words, ladies and gentlemen, use good judgment! You've been doing that all along, so I know you can do it now.
\n
\n3) Rule Number 3 is really just to look at Rules 1&2 and multiple them by 100. Who knew this class was about math?
\n
\nBegin collaborative discussion now!","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"53029102","body":"Why don't I start?
\n
\nI think you guys, for the most part, were not really that into "Titanic." I thought the background information and the stories about the people who were actually on the ship were really interesting, but overall, the film seems pretty corny now, doesn't it?
\n
\nOne that you seemed to all like the surprised me was "American Graffiti." I thought it might be too Happy Days-meets-Sand Lot-and-looks-like-Grease-without-singing, but I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. A good coming of age film is universal, and that's what is so classic about "American Graffiti." It was a film that people like my dad loved-- and now even students your age can enjoy it. That was a really cool surprise.
\n
\nWhat do you think would be a good addition? Some suggestions I got were as follows:
\n
\n-"Star Wars" (not sure which one, probably one of the classics)
\n-"There Will Be Blood"
\n-"Avatar"
\n-"Forest Gump"
\n
\n"Avatar" is so much like the movie "Dances With Wolves." That would sure be interesting!","dateCreated":"1334765640","smartDate":"Apr 18, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"lindseywelch","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/lindseywelch","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"51764784","dateCreated":"1331841235","smartDate":"Mar 15, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"lindseywelch","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/lindseywelch","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/spshistoryinfilm.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/51764784"},"dateDigested":1532652190,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"The Manchurian Candidate","description":"Start discussing "The Manchurian Candidate" here!

This will notify you when others respond to your comments on the message board. I'm looking for some original thoughts that incorporate ideas from the assigned reading. Ask thought-provoking questions or suggest new interpretations, and back up your ideas with evidence.

It's about a German businessman (played by Ralph Fiennes, who plays Voldemort in all the Harry Potter films, a total acting genius) who saves all of these Jewish refugees by letting them work in his factory. Ben Kingsley plays his Jewish accountant... it's just an overall wonderful film. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, the story is amazingly gut-wrenching, and the acting is grade A.

But I believe that one reason this film is so popular still even today is because of all of the different problems and ways of life the film takes into account and describes.If you think about it, you can see the place of women changing from before the civil war to eventually after the civil war, the slaves social standing slowly beginning to change from the end of the war, and possibly even how the lives of the wealthy changed after the war. Although it may be somewhat romanticized in some aspects this film still takes into account many tuning points of American history.","dateCreated":"1321321984","smartDate":"Nov 14, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"wkneip","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/wkneip","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"46338888","body":"What does the fact that the movie was produced in the 30's have to do with it? I mean none of us are certain why the director decided to leave parts of the book in the movie. Maybe because he needed to save time, maybe he wanted to make people focus on the film rather than the drama of depictions. It most likely would have taken away from the film itself because rather than focusing on the beauty of the film itself people would look at the depictions.","dateCreated":"1321460693","smartDate":"Nov 16, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"wkneip","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/wkneip","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"46451900","body":"i liked how much scarlet grows through out the movie. she goes from a prissy princess to a take charge kind of girl","dateCreated":"1321472188","smartDate":"Nov 16, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"whetstoneca1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/whetstoneca1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"46452212","body":"did anyone elso notice that the background of some of the scenes seemed like they had been painted onto a giant peice of paper and stuck up behind the set. although i guess they did good for the technoligy that they had to work with. just some of it looked rather unrealistic.","dateCreated":"1321472396","smartDate":"Nov 16, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"whetstoneca1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/whetstoneca1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"46452784","body":"i agree with jordan, i also liked that the film has a political opinion. and i think that i some ways the movie did depict southrens in certain way but it could have been much worse. they just made the girls seem kind of helpless in the beginning","dateCreated":"1321472790","smartDate":"Nov 16, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"whetstoneca1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/whetstoneca1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"46475778","body":"haha yeah the scenery in some scenes looked kind of questionable but hey you cant blame them it was the late 30's.I also think that Scarlett's growth is also just like the South's growth","dateCreated":"1321488853","smartDate":"Nov 16, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"wkneip","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/wkneip","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":9}]}],"more":true},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
